Coastal Black Tulip Sessions

Come “Tiptoe through the Tulips” with us!
March 1, 2025
Spring has arrived on the Island ♥ The robins are singing, daff’s are showing color…
And it’s time to announce one of our favorite marathon sessions of the year!

Located in Black Creek, Coastal Black is an award winning estate fruit winery and cidery nestled at the base of Mt. Washington on the outskirts of the beautiful Comox Valley.
If you haven’t visited there before; take a peek at their website here – Coastal Black Estate Winery

In our eyes, it is more than a farm.  More than a winery.

It is the epitome of a successful family business. Four generations living and working together.

Committed to producing the highest standard of wines, ciders, fruit, vegetables and honey each day.

Offering their community nourishing food.  Creating events that nourish the soul of the Vancouver Island families.

Years ago, Lacey had a fixation on visiting the Fraser Valley flower farms to experience the annual tulip season.  It was a trip that was never taken.

But, it was a beautiful coincidence.  At the same time Lacey was dreaming of frolicking in the flowers with her girls, Coastal Black was dreaming of establishing their own Tulip Festival!

With 200,000 bulbs from Holland {Please take a moment to acknowledge that number!  Sooooo many lil bulbs!}. The family has HAND-PLANTED {this is a commitment to following your passion} more than 14 varieties of Tulips and Daffodils.  Coastal Black created the first Annual Tulip Festival on Vancouver Island, making the family’s dream a reality.

And so, Lacey continues to dance every spring {girlfriend’s got moves!}.  Although we know the farm well now, we almost always do pre-season ‘light and location checks’ with Lacey’s girls – Willow, Wren + Wynnie.  Um, girlfriend also wants fresh floral family fotos for herself 😉

Four years later walking down to the breathtaking fields is as mesmerizing as the first time.

Vivid colors. Waves of delicate blooms dancing in the wind.  And, the sweet, sweet scent of Spring on the Island.

Are you considering a “Tiptoe through the Tulip” session with us?  Here’s an overview of our sessions:

  • We book two to three days with Coastal Black each year.
  • The farm offers exclusive dates to photographers, which means no one else is on site when we are.
  • We have full access to the farm, after the farm closes to regular visitors.
  • Our sessions generally begin at 5 p.m. and run until sunset.
  • We only shoot on our posted dates (see our social media).
  • We shoot rain or shine.  Spring showers provide highly saturated, rich images.  And, you know what happens after the rain; often a rainbow!
  • We suggest bringing a small cooler to take home their famous, fabulous, frozen blueberries.  These are a family favorite!
  • You may also want a mason jar with water for a few bunches of tulips to brighten your kitchen table!

What to wear to these glorious sessions?

  • Regardless of the temperature, and we’ve shot on some coooool days, the flowers still scream spring!
  • So if the day is cool, bring a sweater, possibly a raincoat and even an umbrella 😉
  • We always suggest a touch of formal.  Neutrals for the win!
  • Women in flowy dresses, straw hats.
  • Bring a wicker basket or cute bag you can fill with blooms.

We are grateful to everyone who has joined us over the past few years.  We have celebrated many of your milestones in these glorious blooms.  And, we have captured a multitude of loving family moments.

And, we are blessed to have Coastal Black sharing their home and showering us all with beauty, light and inspiration.
If you have not visited the farm, we assure you that it is an Island Bucket List destination.

We hope you will join us in this celebration of Spring and come dance in the fields with us!
